What Is The Point In Having Bridesmaids For Your Wedding?

Having bridesmaids at a wedding comes from a western tradition. But this should not stop you from having them for your Thai wedding. Read on to find out how they originated and why you should adopt this western custom.

A brief history of bridesmaids

Traditionally, having bridesmaids was mainly for a superstitious reason that dates back as far as Roman times. A group of unmarried women would be chosen to accompany the bride on her wedding day to the home of her future husband. They would wear identical or similar clothing to confuse evil spirits, preventing them from being able to identify which of the ladies was the true bride and causing her any harm.

Bridesmaids are now commonly close female friends and/or family of the bride chosen to be part of the wedding party. They look after the bride by attending to any needs she may have from planning the wedding up to preparations on the day itself. Often the bride chooses her closest friend or sister to be her maid of honour (if she is unmarried) or matron of honour (if she is married). The maid of honour is appointed to take on particularly important tasks such as bookings and dress fittings. More recently, brides who want to involve a close male friend in her wedding party can appoint him as her ‘man of honour’.

Why should you have bridesmaids?

So now you may well be asking, what is the point in YOU having bridesmaids for your wedding?

Well, it’s always good to have a helping hand. By now you might be pulling your hair out with all the difficult decisions you have had to make. Make your life a little easier and delegate some errands to your bridesmaids instead. This lightens your workload and gets your friends (who surely will be more than happy to help) involved in the wedding too!

Your bridesmaid’s are there to assist you with making sound decisions for your wedding. Take them to your wedding dress appointments to get an honest opinion so you know you will look your very best for the day. It’s also a good idea to have them around to do some food tasting for your Chinese banquet dinner – we doubt they will hesitate to join you for that one!

In the west, the maid of honour is often in charge of arranging a bachelorette party for the bride. Get your best friend to sort out a day of pampering and champagne at a spa for you and your bridesmaids to relax and enjoy together after all those stressful decisions that you have made. Then party the night away to celebrate your last few weeks as a single lady. Maybe having your relaxing spa treatments the day after a heavy night would be a better idea!

For your Thai wedding, your bridesmaids can assist you during the ‘Khan Mak’ procession from the groom’s family to the bride’s house. Or if you are having a Chinese tea ceremony they can help arrange the serving order. This is particularly beneficial especially if you have a big family. Last thing you want is to be stressed and confused as you go through seniority starting from the father’s side to the mother’s side. Let your bridesmaids take on this responsibility.

Of course having bridesmaids also means having to select more dresses to go with your wedding theme as well as making sure they don’t clash with yours. This may be a little extra work, but with the girls on board they can help you with your decisions. There’s nothing more fun than a group dress shopping session! Our next post will help you style your bridesmaids. There are so many creative options for you to choose from and we want to share our ideas with you.

Who should I have as my bridesmaids?

Who you choose to be a bridesmaid is completely up to you. There are no rules to follow when it comes to this. Simply pick whoever you want to involve in your wedding party. If you feel that it is too difficult to choose from a very large group of friends then it is probably best to stick to your sisters and cousins. Keeping it to family only will mean that none of your friends can be offended if you don’t pick them.

The number of bridesmaids you pick is also whatever suits you best. You can simply have one bridesmaid or maid of honour to look after you or go for a whole entourage of ten girls! Some brides like to match the number of bridesmaids to the same amount of groomsmen on the boys’ side. This can be quite visually appealing when it comes to the photo opportunities for your photographer.
